The (Un)Importance of Formatting

Language is fluid, constantly changing and evolving...and as such, so does the written word.

Looking back, I don't know that I've used proper MLA formatting since I was in University, and even then it's not like I had a mass of papers to write each term. My novel uses proper formatting...but now any use of indents and notations have been all but lost.

Do they even teach letter writing in school now? So much of our correspondence now is done via e-mail; or worse, in texts and short form on sites like Twitter.

The way we as a society use language to communicating with each other is changing - but I'm not entirely positive that it is a change for the better. We tend to go for the quick option (like dropping the letter U from Colour) and laziness should never be encouraged. My writing style has never been perfect and my vocabulary is not nearly as vast as others around me, but I can at least claim to know how to write a proper sentence. Will future generations only communicate ideas in 140 characters?
